Like a Love Story by Abdi Nazemian is a poignant coming-of-age novel set in 1989 New York City during the height of the AIDS crisis. It follows three teenagers-Reza, a closeted Iranian boy fearful of revealing his sexuality; Judy, an aspiring fashion designer whose beloved uncle is dying of AIDS; and Art, Judy’s out and proud best friend and passionate AIDS activist. As Reza starts dating Judy to conceal his true feelings, he finds himself drawn to Art, sparking a complex love triangle that tests their friendship and forces them to confront love, identity, and loss amidst the fear and activism surrounding AIDS.

Through their intertwined stories, the novel explores themes of courage, acceptance, and the power of chosen family during a turbulent time for the LGBTQ+ community.
